You know the site is one of the internet’s staple destinations, but just how significant a presence is YouTube? Recently, YouTube surpassed Facebook in monthly unique visitors, making it the largest social media platform in the world. According to Compete PRO’s data for the month of June, YouTube’s 167,848,349 unique visitors overtook Facebook’s 166,497,314 by a margin of 1,351,035. Whew. Facebook is a pretty tangible benchmark when it comes to measuring the social media powerhouses, but YouTube is just as, if not more, impressive. Here are some more figures that might make you rethink the internet’s hierarchy.

Heading directly to the source yields some of the best mind-blowing stats. YouTube’s Press site reports the following:

  • Over 6 billion hours of video are watched each month on YouTube—that’s almost an hour for every person on Earth. (Yeah…)
  • 100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute. (That’s over 4 days’ worth of content every 60 seconds.)
  • 80% of YouTube traffic comes from outside the US. (Whoa.)
  • YouTube is localized in 61 countries and across 61 languages. (How many languages can you even name?)
  • According to Nielsen, YouTube reaches more US adults ages 18-34 than any cable network. (Make way, conventional television…)

  • Mobile use makes up almost 40% of YouTube’s global watch time, and the site is available on hundreds of millions of devices. (Attached to your phone? You’re also attached to YouTube!)
