Mind-Blowing YouTube Stats

You know the site is one of the internet’s staple destinations, but just how significant a presence is YouTube? Recently, YouTube surpassed Facebook in monthly unique visitors, making it the largest social media platform in the world. According to Compete PRO’s data for the month of June, YouTube’s 167,848,349 unique visitors overtook Facebook’s 166,497,314 by a margin of 1,351,035. Whew. Facebook is a pretty tangible benchmark when it comes to measuring the social media powerhouses, but YouTube is just as, if not more, impressive. Here are some more figures that might make you rethink the internet’s hierarchy.

Heading directly to the source yields some of the best mind-blowing stats. YouTube’s Press site reports the following:

  • Over 6 billion hours of video are watched each month on YouTube—that’s almost an hour for every person on Earth. (Yeah…)
  • 100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute. (That’s over 4 days’ worth of content every 60 seconds.)
  • 80% of YouTube traffic comes from outside the US. (Whoa.)
  • YouTube is localized in 61 countries and across 61 languages. (How many languages can you even name?)
  • According to Nielsen, YouTube reaches more US adults ages 18-34 than any cable network. (Make way, conventional television…)
  • Millions of subscriptions happen each day. The number of people subscribing daily is up more than 3x since last year, and the number of daily subscriptions is up more than 4x since last year. (More and more people are becoming more and more invested. Curious about Bent Pixels’s services yet?)
  • Mobile use makes up almost 40% of YouTube’s global watch time, and the site is available on hundreds of millions of devices. (Attached to your phone? You’re also attached to YouTube!)

ReelSEO also provides a few shiny nuggets from YouTube’s playbook:

  • 500 years of YouTube videos are watched on Facebook every day. (Years. Right.)
  • 700 YouTube videos are shared on Twitter each minute. (Not counting the resulting retweets…)

So YouTube, the biggest of the big, is also an enormous presence on the other biggies. Got it? If your brain’s ready for more, here’s the scoop on moneymaking opportunities and Content ID facts, again from YouTube itself:

  • YouTube’s Partner Program, created in 2007, now has more than a million creators from over 30 countries around the world earning money from their YouTube videos. (So, why not you?)
  • Thousands of channels are making six figures a year. (From a website that provides free content hosting.)
  • Over a million advertisers are using Google ad platforms, the majority of which are small businesses. (YouTube and Google are accessible media outlets, and the opportunity here is not an exclusive one.)
  • Content ID scans over 400 years of video every day. (Good luck, piracy…)
  • There are more than 25 million reference files in YouTube’s Content ID database; it’s among the most comprehensive in the world. (And Bent Pixels’s technology can still catch what Content ID misses. Pretty neat.)
  • Content ID has generated hundreds of millions of dollars for partners. (DRM services point cashflow back in the right direction.)

These numbers may be difficult to process, but the fact is this: YouTube is a giant, and one that’s only growing bigger and better. The space evolves and changes on a rapid basis, as do opportunities to thrive online. By taking advantage of YouTube’s accessible tools and options, there’s equal success to be had by creators, advertisers, and in-betweens alike.
